A Decision That Still Surprises People

In 2021, Jamie made a decision that still surprises people.

She bought a spa she had no plans to buy.

A few months earlier, she had been working as a CAD Manager in the rail industry. After helping navigate years of growth, uncertainty, and the disruption of the pandemic, that chapter ended unexpectedly.

Like many people facing an unexpected change, she had a choice: find another version of the career she already knew—or try something entirely different.

At the time, owning a spa wasn't part of the plan.

In fact, there wasn't really a plan at all.

There was only an opportunity.

When Opportunity Arrives Uninvited

The owner of a local spa wanted to retire. The business needed someone willing to take responsibility for it. The numbers made sense. The clients mattered. The services mattered.

And perhaps most importantly, it was a place Jamie already knew well.

For years, she had experienced electrolysis as a client.

Now she was being offered the chance to become an owner.

Most people would have said no.

The safer answer was certainly no.

No formal beauty-industry background. No esthetics license. No experience managing a spa. No roadmap for what came next.

Just a decision.

Choosing Responsibility Over Comfort

So she cashed out retirement savings, accepted the risk, and stepped into ownership.

From the outside, that can look like confidence.

It wasn't.

It was responsibility.

If she was going to own a business where people trusted practitioners with their skin, their appearance, and their well-being, she believed she needed to understand the work as deeply as possible.

Not just the business.

The craft.

The training.

The decisions.

The standards.

The things clients never see.

Learning the Profession From the Inside

So while others were focused on ownership, Jamie focused on education.

She read the books.

She sat in on training sessions.

She asked questions.

She listened.

And she learned very quickly that owning a business and understanding a profession are not the same thing.

The deeper she looked, the more she realized how much there was to learn.

The Beginning of Something Bigger

That choice marked the beginning of a long education.

One that would eventually reshape how she thought about leadership, responsibility, and what it means to build something that lasts.

At the time, however, none of that was obvious.

She was simply the owner of a business she wasn't qualified to operate herself.

And that reality would teach lessons no textbook ever could.
